Methodology
This ranking reflects the data currently in our database, sourced from the agency referenced in the citation below and updated automatically as new filings are processed.
Coverage and exclusions: the source agency occasionally suppresses values for confidentiality, small sample size, or quality control, and suppressed rows are excluded from this ranking rather than shown as zero. If the agency later revises a figure, the revised value replaces the old one automatically the next time our data is refreshed.
Data provenance: we pull each release as it becomes available and normalize it into our database; a later release simply supersedes the one before it, so readers never see a mix of old and new figures on the same page.

What this analysis cannot tell us
ICD-10 C00-C97 covers all malignant neoplasms (cancers) plus benign and in-situ neoplasms, the aggregate rate does not reveal which cancer type drives a state's ranking. State variation in cancer mortality reflects long-running factors including population age structure, smoking-prevalence history, occupational exposure, screening access, and demographic composition; ranking does not measure current state-level cancer-care quality. Age-adjustment uses the year-2000 US standard population. Small-population states with low annual death counts can exhibit higher year-to-year variance. The PlainHealth dataset reflects the underlying-cause field as coded by NCHS, comorbid contributions to mortality (e.g. cancer plus cardiovascular disease) are not separated.
